Festivaletteratura in a Nutshell

With a distinctive entertaining cultural atmosphere, Festivaletteratura offers five days of readings, meetings with writers, shows, and concerts. Since 1997 Festivaletteratura has become a regular rendez-vous for book lovers as well as for inquisitive people just wishing to meet writers, musicians, and actors in the piazzas and streets of Mantua.

Over the past editions, Festivaletteratura has been very well received by the general public thanks to its original approach and the quality and variety of the events. The meetings between the public and authors, readings, theatre and music shows take place in unusual locations with a rich historical and artistic background.

Everything is within walking distance in the art city of Mantua. In September the city turns into the welcoming citadel of Festivaletteratura where culture and literature become entertainment, a live performance, where public and authors meet in a casual way. Writers, the public, organizers, volunteers, and Filofestival members help collectively to create a festive atmosphere.
Italian writers and poets together with internationally famous young writers take part in literary meetings – the core of the programme - where they speak with their readers in a casual and informal way both during the event and around the streets of most welcoming and hospitable city of Mantua.

Special attention is paid to children who benefit from a dedicated programme featuring meetings, workshops and entertainment.
And there is more to Festivaletteratura: guided tours to admire the historical and cultural heritage of the city, theatre plays written by famous playwrights, poetry readings to listen to the inner voices of the poets and appreciate their world and feelings. It also offers music shows where important singers reinterpret various literary traditions, conferences on art, architecture, design and illustrated books. In addition, festivalgoers can enjoy breakfasts with authors and readings in the original language in Piazza Concordia.

During the Festival, Mantua opens up its palaces and private gardens to the public and lends its piazzas and streets to meetings and shows. In addition to its art masterpieces known worldwide, Festivaletteratura visits less renowned but equally valuable sites, thus discovering new gems year after year. Throughout the Festival, the whole city springs into action and becomes a stage where shops, cafés and restaurants in the historical centre act together to help visitors discover, enjoy and appreciate Mantua.
